What is sedation dentistry?

Wikipedia.org defines sedation dentistry as:

“…the use of pharmacological agents to calm and relax a patient prior to and during a dental appointment. The pharmacological agents usually belong to a class of drugs called sedatives, which exert their action by depressing the central nervous system, specifically those areas concerned with conscious awareness.”

Many people suffer from dental phobia; in fact, 30% of Americans do. Their fear and anxiety keeps them from visiting the dental office, and often causes their dental health to suffer. What they don’t realize is that sedation dentistry was created to address these issues, and to make visiting the dentist a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Perhaps you’re a person who gets anxious at just the thought of visiting the dentist. Maybe you feel embarrassed about neglecting your teeth, or worried you’ll be judged by your dentist for doing so.
